The following is the curriculum for the 2007/2008 school year:

  • Pre-K/Kindergarten – Montessori education – Practical Living
    • Students receive instruction in Theology, Math, Language Arts, Handwriting, Science/Health, Social Studies, Music, and Spanish in an environment which emphasizes spiritual, social, and character development. They also develop practical life skills appropriate to their development.
    • Optional Mathematics Supplement – Singapore Math Kindergarten Series

  • Primary – approximately Grades 1 and 2
    • Mathematics
      • All students are individually assessed and then placed in the appropriate level.
      • Singapore Primary Math Series (Levels 1A-6B) beginning with Grade 1 and continuing into middle school.
      • Students work at their own pace with individual and group instruction and supplemental activities provided by the instructor.
    • Language Arts
      • Spelling Power – Formal study in spelling begins in about Grade 2 when the child can read and write with some fluency.
      • Student activities include: journal writing, literature response, word logs, games, process writing, read aloud books (various picture books and chapter books), projects (book reports, autobiography, biography, book project) and handwriting (write letters and copy/ memorize poems, scriptures and quotes).
    • Science
      • Primarily from an experiential standpoint to explore the wonders of God’s creation, encouraging trial and error and documentation of results.
    • History
      • An exploration of history from stories about American and World history and biographies of notable Americans and other figures.
    • Theology
      • Students explore Baptism, the Eucharist, First Communion and Reconciliation, and the dignity of a child of God presented in the New Testament. Emphasis is placed on character development through study of heroism and courage found in the saints, apostles, and martyrs.
      • For home study, we recommend using the Faith and Life series. We also suggest enrollment in your home parish’s Religious Education program

 

  • Intermediate – approximately Grades 3, 4, and 5
    • Mathematics
      • All students are individually assessed and then placed in the appropriate level.
      • Singapore Primary Math Series (Levels 1A-6B) beginning with Grade 1 and continuing into middle school.
      • Students work at their own pace with individual and group instruction and supplemental activities provided by the instructor.
    • Language Arts
      • Spelling text: Spelling Power used for Grades 2 through 8.
      • Grammar Text: Intermediate Language Lessons.
      • Writing instruction: Writing Strands.
      • Vocabulary: Wordly Wise series.
      • Memorization and discussion of poetry selections: The Harp and Laurel Wreath.
      • Novels and short stories appropriate to the age and abilities of the students.
    • Science
      • Harcourt Science used for home instruction.
      • Labs and discussion are done in class.
    • History
      • Home study in Pioneers and Patriots.
      • Class time includes discussion and projects based on the reading.
      • Geography: Map Skills.
    • Theology
      • Explore Baptism, the Eucharist, First Communion and Reconciliation, and the dignity of a child of God presented in the New Testament. Emphasis is placed on character development through study of heroism and courage found in the saints, apostles, and martyrs.

 

  • Secondary – approximately Grades 6, 7, and 8
    • Mathematics
      • All students are individually assessed and then placed in the appropriate level.
      • Singapore Primary Math Series (Levels 1A-6B) beginning with Grade 1 and continuing into middle school.
      • Singapore New Elementary Math Series (Volumes 1-4) beginning in upper middle school through high school.
      • Upon completion of the New Elementary Math Series, student will enroll in dual credit courses or pursue advanced mathematics instruction.
      • Students work at their own pace with individual and group instruction and supplemental activities provided by the instructor.
    • Language Arts
      • Spelling text: Spelling Power used for Grades 2 through 8.
      • Grammar Text: Basic Language Principles – includes study of Latin roots.
      • Writing instruction: Writing Strands.
      • Vocabulary: Wordly Wise series.
      • Memorization and discussion of poetry selections.
      • The Harp and Laurel Wreath. Novels and short stories appropriate to the age and abilities of the students.
    • Science
      • Prentice Hall’s Science Explorer series.
      • Labs and discussion are done in class.
    • History
      • Home study in The Old World and America.
      • Class time includes discussion and projects based on the reading.
    • Theology
      • Study the Old Testament with emphasis on the Pentateuch and the Psalms from Israel’s historical and worship experience, and the foundation of Biblical studies. Content study includes: Creation and the dignity of the human; the Patriarchs and Shrine theology; the Exodus and Covenant theology.
      • Process moral issues in the world around them, exploring ideals and values, and making decisions.
      • Upper level emphasizes the Church, its history and mission; society, culture and faith; vocation and documents of the Church.

 

  • Additionally, all students receive instruction in:
    • Foreign Language
      • Spanish – All grades receive Spanish-only instruction.
      • Older students use the program Rosetta Stone Spanish for home study.
    • Music
      • Kathy Kanewske provides wonderful, original music for the children to sing during Chapel, in addition to teaching the children more traditional hymns.
    • Art
      • The students experience lessons in art on Friday mornings and work with a variety of mediums and styles.
    • Character Education and Service Work
      • The students participate in providing cards, first aid kits and other items to Mobile Loaves & Fishes, a ministry which supports the homeless.
      • The children made “Ojos de Dios” ornaments to send to a school in Argentina.
      • The students joyfully help in setting up the classrooms and participate in cleaning the facility occasionally to learn the value of caring for their surroundings.
      • The students and families make cards and write letters to encourage our Bishop and others in our Diocese.
